Surfing with ease!

Use a Raspberry Pi as a server on your home network to run Pi-Hole and Unbound.

  • Block malicious or unwanted web sites.
  • Remove advertisements from web sites.
  • Add more privacy by storing web activity locally.

What is a Pi-Hole?

The Pi-hole® is a Linux network-level advertisement and internet tracker blocking application which acts as a DNS sinkhole intended for use on a private network. It is designed for low-power devices with network capability, such as the Raspberry Pi, but supports any Linux machines. Basically, it allows you to block internet ads on web pages and any site that you don’t want coming into your home, such as porn sites. Click here to learn more about Pi-Hole and installation.

I use firebog.net to look up more block lists to add to pi-hole. To block porn sites add this URL to your group block list:

What is Unbound?

Unbound is a validating, recursive, caching DNS resolver. To learn more about Domain Name Servers(DNS) click this link. Unbound allows you to store all the web sites that you view to be cached locally. As a result, it makes web browsing more private instead of the sites being stored on your internet service providers (ISP) servers. Some ISPs will sell your web browsing data to third parties. Click here to learn how to install Unbound with Pi-hole.

Raspberry Pis on my network

I am running two pi-hole DNS servers as redundancy. In case one goes down, I can still access web sites. My router is also balancing the internet traffic between the two. They are powered by Power-Over-Eithernet(POE) using a POE switch. Below is a list of my set up:
